For October, parents and their children at Mom’s House focused on our community! A special thank you to everyone that helped to make all the activities possible, including the Lancaster City Fire Company! These local heroes came to Mom’s House and gave our families a tour of a Fire Engine as well as let everyone take a turn at trying on fire fighting equipment, that’s heavy stuff!

We often speak of how we are supporting children to meet their milestones and prepare them for Kindergarten or other learning opportunities in the future.

We year after year see children who have touched our lives and forever leave a mark on Mom’s House. Seeing them develop into the young boys and girls that will take place in our workforce in years to come might be hard to imagine, but in a blink of an eye, they are there!

Mom’s House collected data from recent parent and preschool graduates. All last year’s preschoolers were excelling in their first year at their new schools. Many parents were proud to report how well their children transitioned in elementary school. One of our 2017 preschool graduate has performed in two ballets for Lancaster Mennonite School in Lancaster. A 2012 preschool graduate received the Presidential Education Award for her academic achievements this past school year.

We sincerely hope these updates fill you with as much joy, love, and pride for the family we serve, as they do for Mom’s House. As the new school year starts; our hearts fill with hope at Mom’s House for both the parent graduates and our preschool graduates on their successes and humbled with gratitude for the supporters who make these moments are made possible.

Families are not the only ones at Mom’s House that transform. Read a sincere letter from our exiting Board Chair, Jean Good.

A few reflections, from my viewpoint as a board member, vice-chair and chair over the last three years; It has been a privilege to journey together with all of you as well as prior board members as we have worked on behalf of the parents and children that come to Mom’s House.  We have challenged each other to become more informed about the mission, develop more partnerships, and be engaged board members.  We believe in the mission to empower single parents to break the cycle of poverty through childcare, support, and resources.

Lately, I have thought of the metamorphosis of the monarch butterfly; from caterpillar to chrysalis then butterfly. To use this analogy, it seems to me like Mom’s House has been a caterpillar for a long time. Steady, crawling, staying alive, but wanting more essential things. Mom’s House is referred to as one of the best-kept secrets of Lancaster County. We want to change that perception.

It seems to me that my time on the board could take the mysterious chrysalis stage of the butterfly –  what happens during the time that the caterpillar turns into a butterfly? For our board, I believe our time in the chrysalis filled us with reflections on the past, analysis of current plans, and focus on future growth.  We asked difficult questions about our current processes and policies to develop our strategic plan for growth.  At times, the “chrysalis” felt like five steps forward in our planning, but two steps back to regroup and rebuild, so that we can move forward as an organization.

To the credit of our board members and Executive Director, Sara Johns, I believe we are achieving a  metamorphosis!  Together we decided to take steps to seek outside advice and counsel from experts in donor relationships and strategic planning.  Over the last year, we worked with two consultants who walked with us and helped us by using their knowledge and skills to guide us on this journey. Thanks, board members and Sara for embracing the process with a common goal for developing a plan that will carry this organization into the future.

From my viewpoint, one of the most critical questions we grappled with is; “Are we serving the parent or the child?” At first, it seems obvious; we serve the single parent seeking to complete their education.  At second glance, we thought, we serve the children entrusted to our care. Then we realized you couldn’t separate the two.  A family is a unit.  To that end, Sara educated us on the difference between daycare and childcare.

Mom’s House provides childcare and an education plan tailored to each child to prepare them for kindergarten and a thriving education beyond our program. Mom’s House has achieved 4-star status with the state, a situation not known to be obtained by a center that doesn’t charge it’s clients. As we asked Sara to help us understand this model, we realized that growth is what we need to give each family the best chance to change their future; to change the future of the generations to come.

We care for the parents by supporting their education, following up regarding grades, and progress, and then celebrating the graduation and eventual career secured. Our care allows them to support their family and lift themselves and future generations out of poverty.

It is up to each of you to decide when the butterfly has fully emerged. Maybe it already has; I have confidence that this organization is poised and ready to move as a group toward a more stable future and foundation to minister to families to come.

-Jean Good, Exiting Board Chair

Secretary Rivera

Want to know a little more about the Keynote Speaker of our 4th Annual Fundraising Gala: Foundations for Transformation?

Read Pennsylvania State Secretary of Education, Pedro A. Rivera’s bio below.

Pedro A. Rivera was appointed as the Pennsylvania Secretary of Education by Governor Tom Wolf and confirmed unanimously by the state Senate in 2015. Currently, Rivera also serves as the President of the Board of Directors for the Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO), a nonpartisan organization of public officials who head state departments of elementary and secondary education. As President, he focuses on promoting equity in education and elevating the ways states can improve the conditions for learning to ensure all students have access to the supports they need to be successful inside the classroom.

Rivera brings extensive experience in public education to his leadership roles. Prior to his appointment to Governor Wolf’s Cabinet, he served as superintendent of the School District of Lancaster. Additionally, he was a classroom teacher, assistant principal, principal, and executive director for the School District of Philadelphia, as well as a staff member with the Philadelphia Federation of Teachers. In September 2014, he was honored by the White House as a Champion of Change for his efforts to transform urban education with his holistic approach to student success – one of ten recipients nationwide to receive the prestigious honor.

As Secretary of Education, he has traveled the Commonwealth meeting with educators, administrators, and students on the Schools That Teach tour, discussing their priorities and needs, and taking those insights back to Harrisburg. Under his leadership, the Pennsylvania Department of Education has engaged thousands of stakeholders – including educators, parents, policymakers, business, and industry leaders, higher education officials, and advocates – to inform the Department’s work on issues like reforming graduation requirement

s and improving school accountability measures. Through establishing the PA Future Ready Index and crafting Pennsylvania’s Every Student Succeeds Act State Plan, Rivera has continuously shown his commitment to educational equity. Rivera also spearheaded the creation of the Superintendent’s Academy, a first-of-its-kind, two-year professional development program designed for district leaders serving in high poverty areas, urban and rural, across the state.

Rivera is a first-generation college graduate and earned a Bachelor of Science degree from The Pennsylvania State University, a Master’s degree in Education Administration from Cheyney University, and his Superintendent’s Letter of Eligibility from Arcadia University.

Rivera was raised in the Hunting Park section of North Philadelphia and resides in Lancaster with his wife Erika, son Lucas, and daughter Elena.

Our Annual Golf Classic was rained out for the first time in 26 years this past Mother’s Day weekend. Mom’s House’s dedicated Golf Committee has rescheduled a rain date for June 10th. Event Chair Dana Mousetis says, “Our committee has worked tirelessly to create an incredible fundraising event, and we would be remiss to cancel.” She goes on to say, “Not to mention our incredible long-time supporters are geared up to play! We cherish this time each year to catch up and fellowship with them. We would hate to lose out on this time together.”

Some exciting highlights for this year’s event include a $10,000 cash prize for a Hole-In-One on the 6th hole, a silent auction including sports memorabilia and Thomas Rhett concert tickets, a raffle and 50/50 drawing. For 26 years now, the Mom’s House Golf Classic has been a staple event for our organization. Standing as our second most significant fundraiser of the year, the outcomes of our Golf Classic directly impact the families in our program. Because of the nearly 100 golfers, 30 sponsors, and many donations, we can put on an event that mixes fellowship with philanthropy. We’re able to educate and spread the word about our incredible families, and we can make an impact on our mission of empowering single parents to break the cycle of poverty through childcare, support, and resources.

Please visit our website momshouselancaster.org or our Facebook page for event details If you have any questions please contact Event Chair, Dana Mousetis at dana.mousetis@momshouselancaster.org or call in at (7171) 396-9130
