“I’m ready to paint… Won’t you help me!”

September 18, 2016

“I’m ready to paint… Won’t you help me!”

Hi I am Lindsay Hillegas, a senior at Penn Manor working on a Take Action Project to earn my Girl Scout Gold Award by partnering with Mom’s House of Lancaster.

My project is to create an information station in the lobby and create an inviting space for program participants to feel welcome and supported.

I have planned to paint the 1st floor lobby and install a pamphlet station but more can be done with YOUR help!

The lobby at Mom’s House serves many purposes such as food and donation drop off and storage, a mall center, a greeting area with a child friendly play station.

Please join me for the kickoff of MHoL Volunteer Saturdays! Staring this month every 4th Saturday of the month Mom’s House will invite volunteers to help with various jobs that will help Mom’s House further their mission. I am so excited to partner with Mom’s House for their first Volunteer Saturday!

THIS SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 24, 2016 FROM 8AM TO NOON – We will be cleaning, patching walls, painting and organizing!

My goal is to find community partners that are willing to donate their time, skill set, and resources to further my lobby renewal project. If you feel called to serve others in this capacity please contact me ([email protected]) or Mom’s House ([email protected]) for more details!

Potential Lobby Improvement Needs-I could use your help with:

  • Painter to paint 2nd story of the lobby
  • Carpenter to install new lobby floor approximately 31 x 15 ft.
  • Carpenter to close off old mail slot
  • Removal of old logo/sign in 2nd story
  • Artist/Sign maker to create a new logo signage in lobby
  • Storage for food donations
  • New kids table, chairs and toys
  • New carpet for lobby
  • Monetary donations

Your help will  better lives touched by the Mom’s House Program AND will also allow me to achieve my dream of earning my Girl Scout Gold Award!

See you this Saturday – 8:00 AM!

What does volunteering mean to MHOL?

August 14, 2016

What does volunteering mean to MHOL?

Our volunteers have saved MHOL money, resources, and time with adding value to our program- at the same time! Without their help we would not be able to further our mission and run our programs.

Our volunteers have also put smiles on our children’s faces, and hope in our parents hearts. A price can not be put on the simple act of being here with a friendly face to let our mothers and children know there are people out there that care and believe in them.

The past two weeks have been such a true blessing for us with volunteers!

LCBC Lancaster’s Circle 3 crew came and worked diligently to get us organized and ready for the upcoming school year!

Wilshire Hill Lions’ Rick Eshleman, William and Lorraine Brown volunteered over 30 hours by helping in our backyard, building maintenance, and fundraising efforts!

Pastor Matt and his Mount Conquer crew did an amazing job helping us with Phase 2 of our backyard redesign!

Bill Brown, a local electrician, donated his equipment and services to upgrade our electrical system!

Halley, An F&M student continues to spending her summer with us and providing help in the classroom!

Our bellies and hearts are full!

July 27, 2016

A huge thanks goes out to Grocery Outlet Bargain Market, on Spring Valley Rd. in Lancaster.

The entire month of July Grocery Outlet on Spring Valley Rd. has been collecting money and food donations for Mom’s House. We have received over 100 pounds of food from Grocery Outlet and their wonderful customers!

Mom’s House doesn’t receive government funding for food, so we rely on the community to help us feed the young children we serve – healthy, hot, and nutritious meals. In the past Mom’s House would be closed for summer; for the past two summers

Mom’s House has been able to help 15 additional families by staying open all year long. Unfortunately, many do not know we are now open during the summer, as a result our donations and food supplies dwindle. We are so blessed that the Grocery Outlet Bargain Market on Spring Valley Rd. has decided to help us in the time we need it most. Thank you to everyone that has contributed to this blessing.

To learn more about Mom’s House LIKE and follow us on Facebook! Mom’s House will also be at the Grocery Outlet Bargain Market located at 2108 Spring Valley Rd. this Saturday. Come by and say “hello”!

“Not Gifts, But Investments” – Donor Appreciation Month; ‘Why I Give’ Series

July 8, 2016

“Not Gifts, But Investments” – Donor Appreciation Month; ‘Why I Give’ Series

“In the 1990s I had become a supporter to Mom’s House. Your Mission is so important to me because it impacts the young lives and ultimately our future.

My parents had been engaged helping the children in our neighborhood growing up, and this had left a meaningful mark on me. As I got older I also saw that helping young parents focus on higher education would be well served by doing what I can to support them.

I learned about Mom’s House from a friend in my prayer circle. He asked our group to pray for a young mother and her 3-year-old son he sponsored through Mom’s House. After hearing her story, I decided to devote my philanthropy to growing the Adopt-A-Mom Program. I am not a rich man but since then my wife and I have participated in the Adopt-A-Mom Program with Mom’s House every year. We have been able to sponsor over a dozen young mothers. It is both thrilling and rewarding to realize that the program my wife and I support contributes to the potential of so many promising students in Lancaster while their children are loved, nurtured, educated, and safe at Mom’s House.

I receive thank you letters nearly every month from mothers we have sponsored, and I am blown away each time by their energy, intelligence, passion, and potential. To one, they are so grateful to be at Mom’s House, and so eager to get out in the world and make a difference. They are growing intellectually and personally. Everyone is a strong individual, seemingly more mature than their years, and eager to carry on the Mom’s House mission of making the world a better place through whatever professional career they pursue. They also seem to be a critical element in transforming the local community.

I have had such a great experience donating to Mom’s House, and I remain grateful for all that your mission does. And I see what a special place Mom’s House is for the single mothers and fathers I support, and for so many others around Lancaster.

I regard my support for these students not as gifts but investments. I am investing in promising students with the hope of realizing long-term returns in the form of a better, independent, and more capable world. More immediately, I hope my philanthropy will have made Mom’s House a better place for all your students to expand their knowledge, improve life skills, and befriend a healthier network of supporters from all walks of life to keep them motivated. I invest in Mom’s House and your Adopt-A-Mom Program in the belief that they are mutually beneficial, the sum far greater than the parts. Through education comes the greatest hope of realizing the fullest human potential.”

Groundbreaking improvements underway.

July 4, 2016

Groundbreaking improvements underway.

Despite having access to world-class childcare for the single parent families we serve, our location limits MHOL’s footprint in the community.

Our Backyard Initiative (BYI) goes beyond high quality childcare, to improve the future of two generations, by improving our property and strengthening the neighborhood’s health.

Launched last year as part of a storm cleanup to our property, we raised over $2,500.00, recruited many supporters, and residents to draw upon their own knowledge, skills, and cultural values to help create a safe, fun and educational backyard for our students.

Continuing our efforts to build an educational play area in our backyard, we have partnered with JM Synthetic Grass, Willow Valley Communities, and Wilshire Hills Lions Club with funding from the Dale S. High Foundation, Willow Valley Communities, PA Healthy Kids. We officially broke ground this independence weekend for our playground.

“Mom’s House is so thankful to everyone involved in this project. It is so heartwarming to see our supporters jump in to make our BYI more than we imagined. This will improve our center as well as the neighborhood.” said Sara Moyer, Executive Director for MHOL. Sara then added “In fact plans are already under way to move our initiative to the front of our building and neighborhood.”

To donate or find out how you can help Mom’s House click the DONATE button on our website, www.momshouselancaster.org, or email us at [email protected].
